Ummmm what is pot?...........?

i know this is a really stupid question and am supposed to know this but i was talking to my friend and she was saying this kids were smoking pot i know its a dug but what exactly is it am just curious and so you don't think am some kind of 10 yr old am a highschool freshman lol
