Would a benevolent and merciful god require that you be "made perfect" to get into heaven?

Ummm...that's kind of the point actually. No living human is perfect. God makes you perfect, not in life but after death and the eternal hereafter. If you had to be perfect before you got in no one would and there wouldn't be much point to the faith to begin with.
